Welcome to Game Jam & Hackathon Culture – Talks, documentary, demos & the Alt Ctrl Game Jam JAMMY Award Ceremony

30 September 2015 @ 18:30

8€

Have you ever heard of game jams or game hackathons? These are events where artists, programmers, game & sound designers get together to make games in only a few days, or in just a few hours! They have even started to make their own controllers, like in the recent Alt Ctrl Game Jam. Tens of thousands of games get made in game jams each year, resulting in amazing new experiences.

Find out why. Join us for a night dedicated to game jamming culture, where we celebrate making experimental games and controllers.

Brought to you in cooperation with the Alt Ctrl Game Jam, Berlin Mini Jam, Game Cinema, BerlinGameScene.com, Rainmaking Loft Berlin and OpenTechSchool.

• Ticket price: €8 (developers who show their project from the Alt Ctrl or the September Berlin Mini Jam (26/9) get free access – please send an email to sjors@gsc.berlin. Other jam projects with weird controllers also welcome.).
• The entire program will be in English.

SCHEDULE

18:30 Doors open

19:00 Welcome by Sjors Houkes (Game Science Center)
A brief hello & the complete beginner’s introduction to game jamming.

19:10 Screening: SUPER GAME JAM (2014), with a live interview and Q&A.

A documentary series by Daniel Oliveira Carneiro (Berlin, DE) & Bram Ruiter (Utrecht, NL) of which we will show 1 episode (25 minutes). Carneiro & Ruiter brought selected independent game developers together in couples and asked them to work on a game for 48 hours, while being filmed. The result is a very engaging documentary series on their process.
After the screening there’s a live Q&A with director Daniel O. Carneiro, a designer & filmmaker who lives and works in Berlin. He is very familiar with the independent game scene and worked on Indie Game: the Movie and several other productions before teaming up with Ruiter for this personal project. www.supergamejam.com
20:00 Talk: Christiaan Janssen – 5 years of Berlin Mini Jam

The Berlin Mini Jam is a monthly game jam that is open for anyone to participate, which has been organized by the same team for 5 years. The challenge is to build a game on a Saturday afternoon, in only 8 hours. But no stress: Berlin Mini Jam is one of the loosest jams around, and celebrates any accomplishment made during that day. The first edition was in 2010, and five years later it has grown to a regular event with usually more than 30 participants. Janssen talks about their motivations to organize this and their experiences in their many days of jamming.
20:30 Break

20:45 Talk: Rachel Uwa (School of Machines, Making & Make-Believe) – You Have Permission: how to use the tools around you to think differently and create new experiences

Rachel Uwa leads the summer program of the School of MA, where participants learn to connect, create and develop. She will talk about using tools, hardware, software and your brains! How do we make sure the concept is key?

21:00 Who wins the very first JAMMY? Alt Ctrl Game Jam award show

We go live to Kristijan Trajkovski, main organizer of the Alt Ctrl Game Jam in Skopje (Macedonia) & Anne B.J. Clausen in Copenhagen (Denmark). We will have a showing of projects on different locations, and together announce the winners of the game jam 2015.

Between September 11-21, the Alt Ctrl Game Jam was held all around the world for the second time. It is a game jam where developers create their own controllers for their new game. This means hacking, wiring, soldering, sawing and painting, sometimes even sewing or 3d printing. In 2015, like in 2014, the Game Science Center will invited the winners of the jam to display their work in Berlin. The most creative and crazy controllers will be displayed for a large audience to play with.
21:45 Jam games showcase

Try out many different projects from the Berlin Mini Jam & the Alt Ctrl Game Jam, or display the game you made yourself. Have a drink with the developers & play the latest experimental games. Find out what a game jam can bring you.
